UK power cut: blackout sparks questions over UK energy system stability

Black Friday came early this year, but instead of good deals on electrical appliances, it brought UK-wide power cuts.

The National Grid frequency hit 48.8Hz, the most extreme deviation from the 50Hz benchmark since 2008, caused by two widely reported trips at a power station and offshore wind farm. To manage this drop in generation, demand was dropped automatically, impacting over 1 million people across the UK for up to 45 minutes.

At npower Business Solutions, Energy HQ our assets responded immediately to protect our customers from these brownouts and helped support the grid frequency to limit the frequency drop. The graphic below shows the frequency drop and our customers’ assets responding over the period.
